CHULA VISTA: Chula Vista's school board restored 20 jobs last night that it had planned to eliminate to cut spending for the coming fiscal year.
The board brought back 11 custodian positions and a variety of other nonteacher posts.
The Chula Vista Elementary School District will still eliminate 42 jobs known as classified positions, which do not require teaching credentials. The jobs include teaching aides, secretaries and clerks. Only nine people will actually lose jobs, said Tom Cruz, assistant superintendent for human resources, because many of the spots are vacant.
An additional 379 employees will see their workdays or work years reduced.
The board previously had rescinded all 401 of the tentative layoff notices it had issued to teachers in March. It has restored positions after the governor increased the amount of money he proposes to spend on education in the year that begins July 1. –C.M.
