District names new principals at five schools

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

June 13, 2008

Five elementary schools in the Poway Unified School District are getting new principals next year, with the new leaders coming from both near (another district school) and far (New Jersey).

All the vacancies are due to retirements or resignations, district officials said after issuing an announcement yesterday.

The new principals and their schools are:

Sal Embry, Painted Rock in Poway.

Embry has been principal of Poway Unified's Sundance Elementary since 2003 and led Midland Elementary for the previous five years. He also has been a teacher at Sunset Hills Elementary and Black Mountain Middle School.

He has a bachelor's degree from Point Loma Nazarene University and a master's from National University. He replaces Jack Troxell, who is retiring.

Desiree Manuel, Sundance in Rancho Peñasquitos,

The office left vacant by Embry's transfer will be filled by the assistant principal of Carmel Valley Middle School in the San Dieguito School District. Manuel previously served as an itinerant assistant principal in the district and the same position at Earl Warren Middle School.

She holds a bachelor's degree from State University of New York at Binghamton and a master's degree from San Diego State University in curriculum and instruction for math and science.

Deanne McLaughlin, Los Peñasquitos in Rancho Peñasquitos.

McLaughlin is completing her sixth year as principal of Franklin Elementary in Bloomfield, N.J. She previously was an elementary teacher in Wayne Public Schools, also in New Jersey.

She earned her bachelor's degree at Rutgers University and a master's in educational administration from New Jersey's Caldwell College. She will replace a team of co-principals, Jeff King and Damen Lopez. Superintendent Don Phillips said King and Lopez resigned to devote full-time attention to their consulting business, TurnAround Schools.

Terry Worthington, Deer Canyon in Rancho Peñasquitos.

Worthington has been principal of Maryland Avenue Elementary School in the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District since 2004. She held previous positions at Black Mountain Middle School, and the Carlisle and Littleton public school systems, both in Massachusetts.

Worthington has a bachelor of science degree from the University of Vermont and a master's in educational leadership from the University of San Diego. She replaces Earl Scull, who is retiring.

Dawn Zwibel, Chapparal in Poway.

Zwibel is assistant principal at Mount Miguel High School in the Grossmont Union School District. She held previous positions in the district at Steele Canyon High and Chapparal Continuation High School, and taught at La Presa Elementary in the La Mesa-Spring Valley district.

Zwibel received a bachelor's degree from the University of San Diego and a master's in curriculum design and instructional leadership from national University.

She succeeds Holly Brommer, who is retiring.

The appointments by Phillips will be submitted to the Poway Unified school board for approval Tuesday. Phillips said parents and teachers were involved in the selection process for most of the vacancies.
