Former mayor to march in R.I. July 4th parade

ASSOCIATED PRESS

7:05 a.m. July 3, 2008

BRISTOL, R.I. – Vincent “Buddy” Cianci may not be mayor of Providence anymore, but he's resuming one of the public duties he lost when he was sent to prison in 2002 for corruption.

Cianci will march in the Bristol Fourth of July parade, the oldest one in the country.

Instead of marching as mayor, he'll march with fellow radio personalities. He's now a talk show host on WPRO-AM.

Cianci marched in the Bristol parade nearly every year he was mayor. His time in office spanned nearly three decades in two separate stints.

His appearance has upset some, including the sister of current Providence Mayor David Cicilline. She wrote to a paper that Cianci's participation was “enormously embarrassing.”

Cianci says people who are offended should “get over it.”
