Calls about potholes on the rise after city establishes hotline

UNION-TRIBUNE

July 5, 2008

ESCONDIDO — Since starting the “Pothole Hotline” May 19, Escondido has seen an increase in the number of calls from drivers reporting the traffic hazards.

Before the dedicated hotline began, potholes were reported to a general line that included graffiti removal and traffic enforcement.

In April, the city Maintenance & Operations department received 55 calls about potholes. In May, the number jumped to 127. Last month, there were 143 calls.

In 2007, there were 53 calls in April, 32 in May and 24 in June.

Richard O'Donnell, deputy director of maintenance and operations, said the center of Escondido receives most of the complaints. The center of the city is generally bordered by Mission Avenue to the north, Felicita Avenue to the south, Ash Street to the east and Interstate 15 to the west.

O'Donnell said that during the winter, there are more complaints because of rain.

Rain seeps into cracks in the road and undermines the surface. When cars drive over the cracks, the street collapses, leaving a pothole.

Once a technician receives a service request, repair takes about one to two business days. It can take longer depending on the need for traffic control.

Repairs are funded by the Streets Division operating budget.
