Vanished: The Mystery of the Gina Lisa
Tribute planned for lost fishermen

 AROUND THE REGION

February 17, 2005

SHELTER ISLAND -- A group of fishing boats will be motoring in tandem around San Diego Bay on Sunday, but they won't be casting for sea bass or pulling lobster traps.

Instead, they'll be paying tribute to Vito Romani and Marcos Alvarez, both lost at sea when their fishing boat, the Gina Lisa, sank 25 miles off the San Diego coast Dec. 5.

Romani, 46, a Point Loma resident whose father owned the Gina Lisa, was the captain. Alvarez, 52, of Ensenada, was his first mate. They were fishing for swordfish when their boat sank in rough weather without so much as a radio call for help. Coast Guard officials are investigating the accident.

The boats will meet at the fisherman's memorial on Shelter Island at 2 p.m. and sail around the bay, throwing wreaths and flowers into the sea.

Anyone interested in participating should call Gloria Dietrich at (619) 518-7706.
