Div. II volleyball: Young Valhalla team tests Scripps Ranch: Early in its Division II final against top-seeded Scripps Ranch, the Valhalla girls volleyball team looked like a squad competing in its first San Diego Section title match.

Div. II field hockey: OT pays off again for Scripps Ranch: Picking up where they left off in last year's Division II field hockey final, Scripps Ranch and Serra battled into overtime for the second straight season. And like last year, the Falcons came away with the title.

Div. I water polo: Carlsbad sets record with sixth straight: In the sixth grade, Colin Smith watched Carlsbad start a string of San Diego Section water polo championships. As a high school junior, he helped the Lancers extend that streak to a record number.

Dons' DeSimone claims title again: After surviving two match points in an extended tiebreaker, after playing 2½ hours of grueling tennis, Cathedral Catholic sophomore Gabi DeSimone followed a winning forehand shot by getting down on the court and raising both arms in celebration of a repeat singles championship.

Pay dispute leaves schools searching for officials: The high school soccer season is scheduled to begin Dec. 1, but it's unclear who will officiate the games.

LCC's Frasier defeated in playoff: At Red Hill Country Club yesterday, La Costa Canyon High junior Danielle Frasier came closer to a state title than any San Diego Section golfer before her.

Bishop's will face Coronado for title: As a freshman reserve, Drew Hoffenberg could only watch as Bishop's came to the end of a five-year title reign with an overtime loss to Coronado last year. As a sophomore starter, he's looking to help the Knights regain the crown from the same opponent.

Valhalla hitter applies orange crush: Valhalla volleyball coach Doug Babington said his squad has no superstars, just a strong team ethic and a desire to win.

For the visitors: There was a moment in Mater Dei Catholic's tennis match with Bonita Vista last month when Danie Corona had heard enough. The pinging of cowbells had gone on for what seemed like hours, but there was little Corona could do.

LJCD junior hopes Ultimate Frisbee catches on: In front of a crowd of fewer than a dozen people on a gloomy Sunday morning, Daniel Stein flicked his wrist and sent a flimsy-looking disc spiraling 70 yards. It soared over the heads of several defenders and into the hands of a teammate for a score.

Coaches fuel this field hockey rivalry: The plan was simple: Put high school field hockey coaches Laurie Berger of Serra and Jane Morrill of Scripps Ranch next to each other for about 30 minutes, turn on a digital recorder and see what happens.
