Woman gives birth at gas station, with officer's help

UNION-TRIBUNE

December 5, 2005

San Diego police Sgt. Jess Havin was patrolling Fairmount Avenue last night when a woman at a gas station started frantically waving him over.

"She was yelling, 'I'm having a baby!' " according to Sgt. Diane Wendell of the San Diego Police Department.

The surprised woman went into premature labor last night and by 7:30 she was at the gas station near Home Avenue in the Webster neighborhood in the final stages of labor when Havin came to the rescue.

As a canine officer, Havin had a problem: He couldn't put the woman in his car because his police dog was inside, so he put her in her car and 30 seconds later, delivered her baby boy, Wendell said.

Paramedics took the baby and mother to a hospital, where they were found to be healthy, Wendell said.
