NATIONAL CITY – A driver going the wrong way and a California Highway Patrol officer were seriously injured during a freeway collision yesterday, authorities said.
The elderly male driver was initially traveling in the correct direction on southbound Interstate 5, but made a U-turn near the U.S./Mexico border and drove about 10 miles north in the southbound lanes before crashing his gray sedan into the officer's patrol car. The collision was reported at about 11:30 a.m., just south of Division Street, according to the CHP.
The CHP officer and the sedan driver were treated at hospitals. The victims' names and conditions were not released.
The crash was under investigation.
