Fast pace lifts Modern Combat

December 5, 2005

Break out the C-rations and spit-shine those virtual combat boots as the popular Battlefield series finally makes its way to consoles. Although Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a stripped-down version of its PC brother, Battlefield 2, it still offers fast-paced first-person-shooter combat accented with a wealth of armed vehicles.

The combat in this title takes place during modern times using modern weaponry, and thrusts the player into the role of one of many soldiers on the battlefield. Before entering combat, the player must select a class, such as sniper or medic. The class determines the types of weapons available to the player and can be changed each time you are killed.

Several different military vehicles are available to use against your enemies, such as helicopters, tanks and armed transports. For the ultimate insult, why not hijack an opponent's vehicle and use it against them?

In the single-player mode, a new form of moving around, called hot-swapping, is offered. Hot-swapping lets you automatically switch from the character you are controlling to any other teammate onscreen with the touch of a button. This is a very cool feature, but doesn't stop the single player mode from seeming identical to multiplayer.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat offers online multiplayer combat for up to 24 people over Xbox Live. This is where the game shines, as there are no brain-dead, computer-controlled enemies to fight. Unfortunately, the online play can be unstable, which results in severe lag.

Still, this is one of the most enjoyable online shooters out there.
