January 4, 2006

Former boxing champion Thomas Hearns has been accused of striking his son during an argument, and faces misdemeanor assault and battery charges.

Police in the Detroit suburb of Southfield said they were called to Hearns' home by his wife on Sunday evening and told that the 47-year-old boxer struck his 13-year-old son.

When police arrived, they found the teenager with a small cut and a bruise over one eye, Detective John Harris said. Hearns was arrested without incident and jailed until his arraignment Monday morning.

Hearns, who had a comeback fight in July, was released on $10,000 personal bond. Magistrate Eugene Friedman ordered him not to have any contact with his son. A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for Friday.
