Padres hire ex-Phils GM Wade as scout in minors

FROM STAFF AND NEWS REPORTS

February 2, 2006

Former Philadelphia General Manager Ed Wade was formally introduced by the Padres yesterday as a professional scout for the club.

Wade, 50, will be based out of his Pennsylvania home covering the Eastern and International leagues.

Wade had spent the past 16 years with the Phillies, the last eight as a vice president and the GM.

The Padres also promoted native San Diegan Josh Stein, 28, to the position of coordinator of baseball research and advance scouting.

Astros file Bagwell claim

The Houston Astros filed an insurance claim on Jeff Bagwell's contract, arguing that the four-time All-Star is too hurt to play. Bagwell, 37, is guaranteed $17 million this season, but by filing the claim the Astros can recoup $15.6 million if Bagwell retires or is deemed too disabled to play.

Around the majors

MLB: Commissioner Bud Selig said he will seek to increase revenue sharing among clubs as the sport prepares to negotiate a new labor contract with the players union. “If you want to be a national sport and have clubs from New York to Kansas City, Los Angeles to Pittsburgh, you need to have revenue sharing,” Selig said for the PBS television show “CEO Exchange” at Columbia University in New York. Clubs share 34 percent of locally generated income under the contract expiring on Dec. 19.

CARDINALS: An insurance company accused the club's owners of making false claims about contamination on the land under its new stadium and then demanding it pay much of the $14 million cleanup costs.

ROCKIES: Pitcher Ryan Speier underwent surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder that could keep him out the entire season. The 26-year-old right-hander went 2-1 with a 3.65 ERA in 22 relief appearances in his rookie year last season ... Also, Sunny Kim and the Rockies argued the first salary arbitration case of the year, with the pitcher asking for a raise to $800,000 and the team offering $600,000.

RED SOX: Outfielder Gabe Kapler, who ruptured his left Achilles' tendon less than five months ago, was among 20 nonroster players invited to spring training.
