SPECIAL EVENTS

Agency: Irish Congress of Southern California, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization that puts on the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade

Need: Children ages 8 and older to carry banners during the parade. Also need adults as parade marshals and security.

Site: Balboa Park at Sixth and Juniper, downtown.

Minimum time: March 11 for four hours. Time can be applied toward school community service credit.

SENIOR ASSISTANCE

Agency: Mira Mesa Senior Center

Need: Volunteers to deliver meals to elderly homebound people (driver's license required) and help in the kitchen and dining room for lunch and cleanup. Community service credit is available for high school students.

Site: Varies.

Minimum time: One to 11/2 hours a day beginning at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Agency: Aging & Independence Services, Ombudsman Program

Need: Volunteers to serve as advocates for residents in long-term care facilities.

Site: 9335 Hazard Way, San Diego.

Minimum time: Ongoing, five hours a week. Forty-hour certification training begins in March.

Contact: Susan Pollock, program coordinator, at (800) 640-4661.

Agency: Catholic Charities Senior Nutrition

Need: Volunteers to deliver meals to the homebound.

Site: Lemon Grove, Spring Valley or La Mesa. Mileage is reimburseable.

Minimum time: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Once a week or once a month.

Agency: HICAP (Medicare Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program)

Need: Volunteer Medicare counselors who help eligible persons understand their options, benefits and rights, including help with denials of claims of service.

Site: Headquarters (Kearny Mesa) or a location near your home (senior centers, community service centers, Social Security offices).

Minimum time: Eight hours a month plus 21/2 hours a month of continuing education.

Agency: Rides and Smiles of Rancho Bernardo/Poway

Need: Volunteer drivers to give rides to local seniors. Volunteers use their own cars, choose the rides they wish to give, and receive liability insurance and mileage reimbursement.

Site: Riders live in Poway, Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Peñasquitos.

Minimum time: None. Drivers may give as many or as few rides as they wish.

Agency: Pomerado Hospital

Need: Volunteers at the reception desk, in the gift shop or in an office. Parking lot shuttle drivers and other positions are also available.

Site: Pomerado Hospital, 15615 Pomerado Road, Poway.

Minimum time: Four-hour shift twice a month; six-month commitment.

Contact: Auxiliary office, (858) 613-4659.

YOUTH MENTORING

Agency: Rolling Readers USA

Need: Volunteers to serve as readers in our Read Aloud and Read Science programs.

Site: Program and elementary school sites throughout San Diego County.

Minimum time: One hour a week.
