Photos: Blaze in the cays guts yacht

February 2, 2006

K.C. ALFRED / Union-Tribune
A 50-foot yacht was gutted by fire in Coronado Cays yesterday morning, at one point drifting away from the dock in flames. No one was on board when the fire broke out about 9:30 a.m. on the Las Vegas, and no injuries were reported. Fire crews from San Diego, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and Santee were summoned, along with the Harbor Police and the Coast Guard. When the yacht's mooring line burned, the boat drifted across the water toward Blue Anchor Cay Road. Firefighters worked to control the fire from both sides of the channel. They used biodegradable foam to put out the fire by 11:15 a.m. Authorities estimated the damage was $250,000, and the cause of the fire was under investigation. The yacht was towed to a Chula Vista salvage yard. The owner was not identified. The only other craft involved was a 14-foot water taxi docked nearby, which had damage to its overhead awning, Coronado Fire Chief Kim Raddatz said.
