Motorsports schedule

May 25, 2006

Saturday

NASCAR Busch Series: Carquest Auto Parts 300, Concord, N.C. (200 laps, 1.5-mile quad oval; FX, 4:30 p.m.) ... Kyle Busch has won the past two Busch races at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Mark Martin is entered and has six Busch wins and 13 top-five finishes at Charlotte. Despite having 19 stitches in his left hand, Denny Hamlin won the most recent race at Darlington, S.C.

NASCAR Craftsman Trucks: City of Mansfield 250, Mansfield, Ohio (250 laps, .5-mile oval; Speed Channel, 11 a.m.) ... Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Mike Greenwell will try to qualify for this race. Todd Bodine leads defending series champ Ted Musgrave by 17 points after finishing third in the Charlotte race last week won by Kyle Busch. A crash in qualifying last week halted Bill Lester's streak at 102 straight starts.

Barona Speedway: Stock, dwarf and limited sprint cars; practice and qualifying, 4 p.m., racing 5:30.

Sunday

Indy Racing League: Indianapolis 500, Indianapolis, Ind. (200 laps, 2.5-mile rectangular oval; Channel 10, 10 a.m.) ... The start has been moved back an hour at ABC's request. Dan Wheldon is the defending champion and starts from the No. 3 spot outside of Marlboro Team Penske teammates Sam Hornish and two-time winner Helio Castroneves, who won the most recent IRL race in Japan to take the season points lead.

NASCAR Nextel Cup: Coca-Cola 600, Concord, N.C. (400 laps; Channel 6, 2 p.m.) ... All eyes will be on El Cajon native Jimmie Johnson, who will attempt to become the 10th driver in series history to win the same event four straight years. Johnson this past Saturday won the All-Star race for the second time. His first All-Star victory in 2003 led to a victory in the Coca-Cola 600. Johnson has won four of the last six points races at Charlotte. NASCAR is mandating 14-gallon fuel tanks (rather than the normal 22-gallon tanks) Sunday to force more pit stops and eliminate the possibility of tire wear problems.

Formula One: Monaco Grand Prix, Monte Carlo (78 laps, 2.068-mile street course; Speed Channel, 5 a.m.) ... Michael Schumacher has five wins on the tour's most famous circuit. Ayrton Senna holds the record with six wins. Kimi Raikkonen is the defending race champion. Reigning world champ Fernando Alonso two weeks ago became the first Spaniard to win the Spanish Grand Prix. Alonso was fourth at Monte Carlo last year, his first nonpodium finish of the season.

NHRA Drag Racing: O'Reilly Summer Nationals, Topeka, Kan. (ESPN2, 7 p.m.) ... Carlsbad's Ron Capps holds the Funny Car points lead despite being eliminated in the first round in each of the past two events. When Brandon Bernstein defeated Cory McClenathan two weeks ago, it ran his record to 10-1 when he reaches the final round of a Top Fuel event. Australian Dave Grubnic became the first non-North American driver to win a Top Fuel event when he triumphed at Topeka last year.
