EVENTOS LATINOS
Best bet • Battle of the sexes at Coors

May 25, 2006

Macho icon Vicente Fernández will share the stage with an unlikely artist: man-bashing mainstay Paquita la del Barrio.

Things can get ugly at Coors Amphitheater in Chula Vista Saturday when two artists that operate at opposite extremes of Mexican culture perform in a historic musical event.

On one side stands the biggest macho of them all: Ranchera singer Fernández, who, with his thick mustache and his imposing sombrero, often sings about how women are creatures that need to be tamed.

On the other is la del Barrio, an irreverent singer with a hoarse voice who chastises men, telling them straight to their face that they are useless human beings.

A corrido might even be written about this encounter.

DATEBOOK

Vicente Fernández and Paquita la del Barrio
7 p.m. Saturday Coors Amphitheater, Chula Vista; $54.50 to $124.50; (619) 220-8497 or ticketmaster.com

“Are you're listening to me, you useless thing!” is a typical line la del Barrio uses during her show, which usually mocks the culture of Mexican machismo. “Because of Your Dammed Love!” is the name of one of Fernández's most popular songs, which often drown feelings of sorrow and acts of treason by women with rivers of tequila.

Even though both artists are living contrasts, they are among the most popular singers in Mexican regional music. Icons, to say the least.

Saturday's performance, however, is not likely to be just a battle of the sexes.

Both might seem tough on the outside. But deep down, la del Barrio loves men, and Fernández, well, he has always adored women.

But, just in case, concertgoers – both men and women – should go ready to listen to a little bit of truth.
