The Last Revival band will rev things up

COMMUNITY NEWS WRITER

May 25, 2006

CARLSBAD – It's usually a quiet place, but the library will be rockin' with music from The Last Revival band tonight.

The five-member teen band will play classic rock covers and original songs for the Rock the Library concert series.

The group is hoping to pack the hall, which seats about 200.

At this year's Carlsbad Battle of the Bands contest, The Last Revival got the crowd going and took first place, coming away with the title, “Carlsbad House Band 2006.”

It beat out nine area bands, even though the musicians were some of the youngest performing.

Since then, The Last Revival has been playing at community events around town and at Aviara Middle School, where several band members attend eighth grade.

What: Rock the Library
When: 7 p.m. today
Where: Schulman Auditorium, Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane
Cost: Free
Information: (760) 602-2058.
The library concert will include several songs they composed, including a rock piece called “Play with Fire.”

The band members' favorite part of performing is the crowd's reaction, said Taylor Wagner, 14, lead drummer.

“The best part is when everybody's screaming around us,” echoed Chris McKeon, 14, lead rhythm guitar.

They talk about the energy they feel when their audience gets into the music.

“We like when they're liking what we're doing,” said Travis Baucum, 13, lead singer.

“We get a big reaction when we're jumping around and rockin' out,” said Sam Bewley, 14, lead guitar.

But there are hours of practice behind it, mostly at Sam's house.

And there are hard parts.

“It's hard telling someone in the band to do something differently. We try to bring it up casually,” Chris said.

Sometimes it's tough coming up with new songs they all like.

“The hard part is trying to make up stuff that hasn't been done before,” Taylor said.

The band got started last fall, but most of its members have been playing music or singing since elementary school.

Taylor started playing percussion about three years ago, using the drums his mother had played when she took lessons before he was born.

“Music keeps them from just hanging around,” said Taylor's mother, Lori Wagner, the band's manager.

Not that the boys have a lot of time on their hands.

Sam is giving up baseball for the band and Travis dropped water polo.

Their goal is to get everyone to know their band.

“We want everyone to come out and hear us,” said Devin Walker, 18, who plays bass guitar.

At the concert, there'll be a bunch of cameras pointed at them as a professional DVD is made, part of their trophy for winning first place at the Battle of the Bands.

“We want to showcase the talent of these kids and let everyone know the library is a cool, hip place where there can be loud music,” said Darin Williamson, teen services librarian.
