ENCINITAS – Dancers of all ages will take the stage this year at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center's fourth annual intergenerational recital.

Line dancing teacher Lois Spaulding led her class at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center in preparation for an upcoming recital. The show will include dancers of all ages performing in a variety of styles.
The event was developed to bring together youth, teens, adults and seniors for entertainment and fun, community center manager Derrick Monroe said.

The show, themed “A Class Act,” has been streamlined to 90 minutes.

Last year, the recital featured participants from most of the classes offered at the center, from yoga to karate to Jazzercise.

This year, the emphasis is on the performing arts, recreation supervisor Nick Buck said. Most of the 12 classes represented are dance-related.

What: Intergenerational Performing Arts Recital
Where: Encinitas Community and Senior Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive
When: 2 p.m. June 3
Cost: Free
Information: (760) 943-2260
Students of all ages will shimmy as belly dancers, kick up their heels in cowboy boots and rond de jambe and pas de bourree in ballet costumes.

Performers have been practicing and many have ordered professional costumes.

Ballet instructor Marti Neal said her dancers worked three months on a three-minute piece she choreographed to music from the opera “Tannhauser” by Richard Wagner.

Neal danced professionally in San Francisco and now teaches as a second job, she said. Her students range in age from their teens to 60, she said.

The recital is good for students because it offers a chance to present themselves to the public and share the joy of dance, she said.

“The kids love the costumes, too,” she said.

Neal said she would love to attract more elementary school children in the area to the community center.

“I just don't think that many people are really aware of it, and of course the prices are so good,” she said.

The center is operated by the city. All programs are generally low or no cost.

Registration is open now for summer classes and camps, which can be viewed at http://encinitascity.com.

The recital usually attracts an audience of about 400, Buck said. Because parents, grandparents and children, enjoy it so much, another show will be added in winter.

The Intergenerational Performing Arts Recital will begin at 2 p.m. June 3 at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. Pizza, soda and chips will be available for purchase. Admission is free. For information, call (760) 943-2260.
