The San Diego State women's track and field team narrowly missed qualifying its 4x400 relay team yesterday at the NCAA West Regional at BYU for next month's national championship in Sacramento.
Despite a season-best time of 3 minutes, 39.26 seconds, the Aztecs quartet of Nicole Stone, Larnie Boyd, Sherraine Pencil and Brittani Dudley finished fourth. The top three relay teams earn automatic berths to nationals.
Stone was seventh (55.20 seconds) and Boyd eighth (56.60) in the 400-meter finals, and in the 3,000 steeplechase, Lisa Crampton (11:23.67) was third and Celeste Tyson (11:24.47) fourth.
The Aztecs women's team finished 16th with 10 points. Stanford and USC tied for first with 94 points.

The UCSD men's team finished 33rd and the women placed 18th at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships at Emporia, Kan.
UCSD's Mike Cunningham was fourth (51.52) and Jon Patton sixth (51.99) in the 400 hurdles. Top UCSD women's finishers included Briana Hinga in the javelin (third, 159-1); Laiah Blue in the 100 hurdles (fifth, 13.88); and Mimi Hodgins in the 800 (seventh, 2:16.63).
