PUBLIC EYE'S WEEK IN REVIEW
Angelina Jolie gives birth

May 28, 2006

The baby has arrived – and no, they didn't name her Brangelina.

Thousands of miles from Hollywood but still within easy reach of celebrity hype, Angelina Jolie gave birth to Brad Pitt's daughter yesterday in Africa, Pitt's publicist announced.

“The night of May 27, 2006 in Namibia, Africa, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt welcomed their daughter Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt. No further information is being given,” publicist Cindy Guagenti said in a statement.

The baby's arrival had been the subject of intense media speculation in recent months.

Jolie, 30, has two adopted children: toddler Zahara, from Ethiopia, and 4-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia.

THIS LITTLE PIGGIE

“X-Men: The Last Stand” star Halle Berry was still standing tall after she broke her toe Tuesday night while rushing to catch a plane to New York City. The star broke the second toe on her left foot as she was boarding a flight in France, where she was promoting her new movie at the Cannes Film Festival.

Always the consummate glamour gal, Berry didn't let her injury cramp her style. On Wednesday night, she was seen wearing high-heeled black wedges while promoting the film.

“I've still got my heels on!” Berry boasted. “What's a girl going to do, right? I knew it was bad news the minute it happened. And yeah, it hurts.”

MORE 'SURVIVOR' DRAMA

A former winner on “Survivor” lied to get time off from his job as a state highway worker to join a promotional tour for the reality TV show in Europe last year, an investigation found.

Chris Daugherty, 35, who won the ninth season of the CBS show, filed a false claim that he needed a month off because he was under stress and suffering from depression, an Ohio Department of Transportation hearing officer ruled Thursday. Daugherty landed the $1 million prize in 2004 for “Survivor: Vanuatu – Islands of Fire.” But, because a million bucks just doesn't go as far as it used to, he returned to his $34,000-a-year job with ODOT, working on roads in central Ohio.

Never one to say “die,” Daugherty submitted a false doctor's excuse saying he was suffering from anxiety and depression and needed a medical leave, ODOT's investigation found. When that didn't work, he even filed a request for military leave – despite never being in the armed services – because the “Survivor” tour was scheduled to visit a military base in Germany.

ODOT officials said Daugherty acknowledged afterward to investigators that he used the time off to attend the tour in Germany and Italy last Sept. 25 through Oct. 8, for which he was paid $8,000. He took an additional two weeks off after the tour before returning to work, records show.

“Daugherty's claim that he had an illness which just happened to coincide with his 'Survivor' tour is simply not credible,” wrote ODOT chief investigator Les Reel.

Daugherty could face penalties ranging from reprimand to dismissal.

HE SAID IT

“I got shot. I'm cool.”

This from heavyset Philly rapper Beanie Sigel, nee Dwight Clark, showing off his bullet wounds to reporters after he was shot during an apparent robbery Thursday morning.

No stranger to gunfire, the 32-year-old Beans served time in the pokey last year on a gun charge.
