Homeless shelter opens early to help with rise of elderly, disabled in need

After a 10-hour wait in line outside San Diego's emergency shelter for homeless adults, Jose Ramirez secured a bed and access to medical and dental services by 8 a.m. yesterday. He accepted a plastic bag of toiletries, along with a neatly folded plaid blanket for a prime lower bunk inside the large tent that has been erected in Barrio Logan.

More and more people are voting from the comfort of their homes, rather than venturing out to the polls on Election Day. And why not? Voters can sit down, have some coffee and take their time making choices. When they're done voting, the ballot box is no farther than the nearest mailbox.
Half-staff a mistake; all is well
Oops. The U.S. flag on the tallest flagpole at the former Naval Training Center got stuck at half-staff. The flag was to be raised after a nine-year absence during a ceremony marking the 83rd anniversary of the base, now called Liberty Station, and the restoration of the historic Ingram Plaza.
