CRIME WATCH; REGIONAL EDITION
Shooting victim left at hospital dies

November 2, 2006

A man believed shot in San Marcos yesterday later died in an Escondido hospital; another man stabbed in the same incident was expected to survive, authorities said.

Palomar Medical Center staff called Escondido police about 4:15 p.m. to report someone had dropped off the two victims at the emergency room, police Lt. Mark Wrisley said.

A man who had been shot in the head was put on life support. Hospital security detained the person who brought the men there, Wrisley said. Police were told the assaults occurred off Twin Oaks Valley Road in San Marcos.

The case was handed over to the Sheriff's Department. Sheriff's Lt. Jim Bolwerk said the hospital notified investigators shortly after 9 p.m. that the shooting victim had died.

Skateboarder, 19, seriously hurt by car

RANCHO PENASQUITOS – San Diego police yesterday continued to sort out an incident Tuesday night that left a 19-year-old skateboarder hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police believe the incident began about 9:20 p.m. when four young men riding in a silver car on Calerdon Road near Ellingham Street confronted two skateboarders and threw eggs at them, San Diego police Sgt. Diane Wendell said.

The skateboarders went home, then returned to look for the men who threw the eggs, and found them.

At one point, police said the driver of the car turned out the headlights and drove toward the skateboarders. The skateboarder was hit by the car, which drove off, police said.

Police yesterday contacted the men who were in the car and were to examine the vehicle involved for damage. Officers also were to interview the victim. There have been no arrests.

The victim suffered serious head injuries in the 10 p.m. assault on Nodica Avenue, San Diego police Sgt. Diane Wendell said.

Police said the assault began after the victim and three others were driving around looking for a party and their car windshield was shattered by the brick.

The victim leaned out the window to see what happened and was struck by someone who was swinging a bat in the street and uttered a gang challenge, police said.
