SAN FRANCISCO – Some companies that do business with the city must disclose past ties to the slave trade under a new measure approved by the Board of Supervisors.
Supervisors unanimously passed legislation Tuesday that would force insurance and financial firms and companies providing textiles to the city to acknowledge any past participation in the slave trade.
The measure also calls for the creation of an account to which companies can make voluntary contributions to fund economic and educational initiatives “designed to ameliorate the effects of slavery upon the residents of San Francisco.”
