REGION UPDATE
S.F. requires firms to report slave ties

November 2, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO – Some companies that do business with the city must disclose past ties to the slave trade under a new measure approved by the Board of Supervisors.

Supervisors unanimously passed legislation Tuesday that would force insurance and financial firms and companies providing textiles to the city to acknowledge any past participation in the slave trade.

The measure also calls for the creation of an account to which companies can make voluntary contributions to fund economic and educational initiatives “designed to ameliorate the effects of slavery upon the residents of San Francisco.”

Man still in custody over Esperanza fire

RIVERSIDE – A man described by authorities as “a person of interest” in the deadly Esperanza arson fire continued to be held yesterday for investigation of two wildfires set in the region earlier this year.

Raymond Lee Oyler, 36, was arrested Tuesday in connection with two June fires in the Banning Pass area, a windy corridor that carries Interstate 10 between mountain ranges west of Palm Springs. Prosecutors said Oyler, who was held in jail, will be arraigned today. Investigators served a search warrant on his Beaumont residence Monday.
