Curtis Martin tried to outrun the inevitable. After months of rehabilitation and countless hours working to get back on the field for the New York Jets, reality finally caught up to the NFL's No. 4 career rusher.
“I think this is as good as my knee gets, where it is right now,” Martin said at a news conference.
The Jets, who had held off an announcement on Martin until yesterday, put the 33-year-old running back on the reserve physically-unable-to perform list with a bone-on-bone condition in his right knee, ending his season before it got started and jeopardizing his career.
“I usually deal with things the way they are now, and with the information that I know about my future, it doesn't look like it's too bright as far as me having a further career,” Martin said. “And if that happens, great.”
Martin has 14,101 career rushing yards. In front of him are Emmitt Smith (18,355), Walter Payton (16,726) and Barry Sanders (15,269).
'Pacman' Jones suspended
The Tennessee Titans suspended cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones, the sixth overall pick in the 2005 draft, for Sunday's game against Jacksonville. Coach Jeff Fisher said he hopes the punishment, which includes banning him from practice and what he called “significant financial considerations,” gets Jones' attention.
Jones has not been convicted of any charge in Tennessee. But last Saturday, he was cited for misdemeanor assault after being accused of spitting on a woman in a nightclub – the third time he has been charged for an incident and the second since the end of August. That doesn't include police naming him as an acquaintance of the main target of a drug investigation last spring.
