The San Diego Union-Tribune

High school athletes of the month

November 2, 2006

Markques Simas
Football
Mira Mesa

There is no more dangerous receiver than the 6-foot-3 senior. While the Marauders were going 3-0 in October, Simas pushed his season marks to 37 catches for 717 yards (19.4 average) and nine TDs. He is currently the most highly regarded undeclared college prospect in the San Diego Section.

Graham Saber
Water polo
Santa Fe Christian

The senior captain continues to be the driving force behind No. 9 Santa Fe Christian's late-season surge. Saber tallied 67 goals, 40 assists and 62 steals as the Eagles went 11-3 last month. That included a pair of 15-goal efforts in wins over Top 10 foe Santana.

Katherine Donner
Field hockey
Serra

Just as she has been the last 2½ years, the senior midfielder remains a rock in the middle for Serra, helping the Conquistadors to a 12-2-1 record in October. Named the Outstanding Defensive Player in the Serra Tournament, Donner recently accepted a scholarship offer to Stanford.

Jaz Machado
Volleyball
La Costa Canyon

Machado, a senior setter bound for UCLA, led the No. 1 Mavericks to a 12-1 record that included a runner-up finish at the Torrey Pines California Challenge and put the Mavericks in control of the Palomar League race. Machado was named all-tournament at the Challenge.

Raymond Blossom
Football
Castle Park

Blossom, a senior running back, keyed the ground effort for the Trojans as they kicked off South Bay League play with a 3-0 start. Blossom finished the month with 540 yards and four TDs on 38 carries. His 283 yards in the Trojans' 41-6 victory over Southwest broke the school single-game record.

Blake Vanderwiel
Football
Torrey Pines

The 5-foot-10, 206-pound senior quarterback had a hand in eight TDs during the month as Torrey Pines solidified its position as the section's top-ranked team. In addition to producing touchdowns with runs and passes, Vanderwiel returned a fumble for a score in a win over Rancho Bernardo.

High school Athletes of the Month are awarded through a partnership between The San Diego Union-Tribune and the San Diego Hall of Champions.
