CRIME WATCH: SOUTH EDITION
Armed teenager steals skateboard

November 2, 2006

NATIONAL CITY – A teenage boy used a gun Tuesday night to steal a skateboard from its 14-year-old owner.

The robbery was reported at 6:25 p.m. on a pedestrian bridge that crosses over Interstate 805, said Officer Parris Bull of the National City police. The victim said he was confronted as he began walking east from Newell Street toward Grove Street on the other side of the freeway. The assailant walked up, revealed a handgun in his waistband and demanded the skateboard.

The victim gave up his board and was not injured.

Police did not provide a detailed description of the robber, but said he was 16 to 17 years old.

Meth load uncovered after cop stops van

NATIONAL CITY – Two men were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of transporting $50,000 worth of methamphetamine after an officer stopped a van for an apparent turn signal violation.

The driver of the van appeared nervous after he was stopped at 5:53 p.m. on East Plaza Boulevard near Euclid Avenue, said National City Officer Omar Ramirez.

Ramirez said he noticed a panel behind the driver's seat was different from the others in the van. So he radioed for a dog trained to detect narcotics from the U.S. Customs Service to help search the vehicle.

The dog indicated there were narcotics near the driver's seat and when police removed its rear panel, they found 5 pounds of methamphetamine sealed in plastic packages. The driver and a passenger were booked on suspicion of possessing and transporting narcotics for sale, said Sgt. Mike Harlan. The motorist was also suspected of driving without a license, he said.

Grocery employee robbed in parking lot

CHULA VISTA – Police were searching for a man who used a knife to rob a Von's grocery store worker of her purse, keys and cash, early Monday.

The robbery was reported at 5:08 a.m. at a Von's parking lot on Third Avenue, near L Street, said Chula Vista police spokesman Bernard Gonzales.

The robber was described as black, about 30 years old, and had a muscular build and a slight mustache, Gonzales said. He was wearing a gray shirt and blue pants during the robbery.

The robber drove away in a burgundy-colored four-door sedan and was last seen driving south on Third Avenue.

The woman's purse contained bank and credit cards, the victim's identification and $7, Gonzales said. She was not injured.
