Art comes alive in the Carlsbad Village every weekend when members of the Carlsbad-Oceanside Art League reveal the art behind their art.
Members demonstrate painting techniques and show juried works on the lawn in front of the Carlsbad Inn, weather permitting.
They've been doing it at least 25 years.
“They add charm to the village,” said league president Sibylla Voll.
She said the group is dedicated to appearing every weekend and attracts a lot of repeat customers.
“Out-of-town visitors almost take them for granted,” Voll said, laughing. “It's not like they are a store.”
The show, called Arts on the Green, is one way the league promotes education and appreciation of fine art.

In addition, members operate an indoor gallery in the Village Faire Shopping Centre in Carlsbad and provide monthly art classes at the Calavera Hills Recreation Center in Carlsbad.
They show in the Oceanside Days of Art event each year and host annual shows for children and teenagers to display their work.
Voll assumed the role of president last year. She has been a member of the Carlsbad-Oceanside Art League for 15 years.
The league started in 1951. Most of the 286 members live in Carlsbad or Oceanside, but residency is not a requirement for membership, Voll said.
Artists who appear regularly at Arts on the Green contribute to a Web log with updates about the show at www.carlsbadinnart.blogspot.com.
A few regulars are Riley Johnston, Tim and Norma Pratt and event organizer Howard Layte.
Johnston writes in the blog that he specializes in “psycho-hypnotherapy sand paintings,” a style used by American Indians to recover from illness. He uses both natural and man-made sands to create a velvety texture on canvas.
Tim is a travel photographer who shoots local scenes popular with tourists. Norma, his wife, is a watercolorist who likes to paint cottages and florals reminiscent of her native England.
Layte owns a gallery and has taught and painted locally for 25 years. He often travels to find subjects for his acrylic work, which he paints in a Southwestern style. Many times he paints on a wrap canvas that does not require framing.
Other regular exhibitors include Janet Finney, Mike Gulewich, Mary Taglieri, John Mcfedries, Clara Evans and Ellablanche Kezar-Salmi.
