Totems: Joan Irving's latest collection of work will be featured in a solo exhibition through Nov. 29 at 451 E. Valley Parkway, Escondido. An opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 11. (760) 480-4101.

Journalist roundtable: Host Eric Larson will be joined by Logan Jenkins, columnist for The San Diego Union-Tribune, and Darlene Smith, managing editor for The Coast News. The journalists will conduct brief interviews at 7 p.m. today on Cox cable Channel 18 in Oceanside. Jerome Stocks, Encinitas councilman, chairman of the North County Transit District and San Diego Association of Governments representative, will talk about the progress of the Sprinter rail line. Other guests are Chuck Lowery, Oceanside organic bakery owner and peace activist who supports more than two dozen local peace and human rights groups, and Ben Meyers, president of the Oceanside Airport Association, who will talk about many issues facing the airport. Holiday boutique: The 27th annual Same Time Next Year holiday boutique will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Windmill in Carlsbad, Interstate 5 and Palomar Airport Road. Admission is free.

Taking your candy to the dentist: Carlsbad orthodontist Dr. Michael G. Willes is sponsoring his eighth annual Halloween Candy Buy-Back, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at 740 Oak Ave., Carlsbad. Hit the trail: The 15th annual San Marcos Trails Day will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Participants can choose from a four-or six-mile hike to South Lake (not usually open to the public) or to Double Peak, one of the highest places in San Marcos.
