London-based Privacy International yesterday ranked 37 countries according to how well they protect individual privacy. The United States was No. 30 because of few safeguards and widespread surveillance since Sept. 11, 2001, the group said. The nations that ranked highest for protecting privacy:

1.Germany

2.Canada

3.Belgium

Austria

5.Greece

6.Argentina

Hungary

Malaysia and China tied for last.
