AZTECS REPORT
Spain doesn't expect to be sidelined long

STAFF WRITER

November 3, 2006

San Diego State sophomore forward Kyle Spain, who missed Wednesday's exhibition game against Point Loma Nazarene because of a sprained right foot, said yesterday he expects to return to practice on Monday.

Spain, who suffered the injury on Tuesday when he got his feet tangled up with those of freshman forward Jon Pastorek, was held out of practice yesterday and will also miss today's workout.

With Spain unavailable, the Aztecs, who open the regular season against Murray State in the Shamrock Invitational in Moraga next Friday, are currently comprised of eight scholarship players, including two true freshmen.

SDSU coach Steve Fisher said he believes Spain, who also jammed his big toe, will play in the opener.

“It's a little frustrating, but I'm just glad it happened when it did so I can be ready to play (against Murray State),” said Spain, who averaged 9.2 points and 5.6 rebounds last season.

Already forced to mix and match following the suspensions of forward Jerome Habel and Brett Hoerner earlier in the week, Fisher praised the play of sophomore center Chris Lamb, who scored 15 points Wednesday after scoring just four all of last season.

“I didn't make as much out of it as I should have, but if we had given out a game ball it would have gone to Chris Lamb,” Fisher said. “From where he was (last year), to what he did (Wednesday) night, he was fantastic. He did what he was supposed to do, ran the floor, defended, rebounded.”

Football commitment

Vince Camarda, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound free safety from Cathedral High, has given an oral commitment to SDSU. A three-year, two-way starter for the Dons, Camarda, who is also a sprinter on the school's track team, was an All-Eastern League selection on defense last season. He also received scholarship offers from Utah, UTEP, Colorado State and Hawaii.

In other SDSU football news, coach Chuck Long said the status of senior cornerback Donny Baker (ankle) is unlikely to be determined until game time tomorrow at Wyoming.
