Bo Matthews' son, 25, dies after seizure

Adam Matthews, a former star running back at Northern Colorado and the son of ex-Chargers running back Bo Matthews, died at his home yesterday. He was 25.

He died in Thornton, Colo., of a seizure, school spokesman Eric Scott said. No other details were provided.

Adam Matthews was the second-leading rusher in school history. He tied an NCAA record in 2003 with 11 straight 100-yard rushing games.

After college, Matthews spent time with the St. Louis Rams and Houston Texans, although he never played in a regular-season game. He also played for the Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europe.

Bo Matthews, 54, starred at Colorado from 1971-73, and was drafted in the first round by the Chargers in 1974.

College soccer

Kathy Sepulveda scored twice as the No. 3-ranked UCSD women's soccer team (19-1-2, 12-0-2) rolled over Western Washington 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament in La Jolla. UCSD, on a 10-game winning streak, will play Seattle Pacific tomorrow at 1 p.m. to determine the Far West Regional Champion.

FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala was suspended six games and fined $3,500 by Major League Soccer for violent conduct after a playoff loss Saturday night to the Colorado Rapids . . . The U.S. women's soccer team defeated the Netherlands 2-0 to reach the finals of the Peace Queen Cup in Suwon, South Korea.

Track and field

Trevor Graham, the coach who trained Justin Gatlin, Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery, was charged with hindering the federal steroids probe he helped launch three years ago when he mailed a vial of a designer drug to anti-doping agents. Graham was charged with three counts of making false statements to federal agents in an indictment issued by the grand jury investigating performance-enhancing drugs in professional sports.

Tennis

Tommy Robredo and David Nalbandian both claimed places in the season-ending Masters Cup: Robredo with a victory, Nalbandian without playing. Robredo beat Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-4, 7-6 (1) in the third round of the Paris Masters to clinch his berth, while Nalbandian, who skipped the tournament, advanced because James Blake lost 6-4, 6-2 to Tommy Haas . . . Defending champion Kim Clijsters cruised into the quarterfinals of the Gaz de France in Hasselt, Belgium, after beating Martina Mueller 6-3, 6-2.

College tennis

Iva Gersic, a New Mexico player from Koprivnica, Croatia, is the No. 1 seed in the first singles flight of the San Diego State tennis “Fall Classic” for women at the SDSU tennis complex. Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. today, tomorrow and Sunday. SDSU has three entries in the first flight (Holly Bagshaw, Alesya Vidov and Ellie Krausova) and USD two (Helene Lindstrand and Monica Weisener).
