Man, 35, beaten after coming to boy's aid

November 3, 2006

LOGAN HEIGHTS – A 35-year-old man was severely beaten last night when he came to the aid of a 12-year-old who was attacked by a group of graffiti taggers, police said.

The 12-year-old was confronted about 6:40 p.m. in front of Handy's Market on South 30th Street by three males in their late teens, who reportedly accused the boy of covering over their graffiti. The boy denied it, but was beaten and knocked down, San Diego police Sgt. Rich Nemetz said.

The boy, bruised from the assault, left and returned with an older friend. Another fight started, and the 35-year-old suffered a fractured skull and broken arm. He grabbed a stick to defend himself, but one of his assailants drew a pistol and aimed it at him. The gunman and his companions then ran away. The injured man was taken to a hospital.

UNIVERSITY CITY – Two masked men armed with handguns robbed Cozymel's Restaurant on La Jolla Village Drive at closing time late Wednesday, police said.

They entered through an open front door about 11:45 p.m., forcing some workers into a restroom and the manager and another worker to a back office, where the robbers took cash, put it in a black backpack and fled, San Diego police Sgt. Richard Nemetz said.
