CRIME WATCH
Two gunmen rob eatery, steal truck

December 3, 2006

NATIONAL CITY – Police were searching for two gunmen who robbed a fast-food restaurant early yesterday and carjacked an employee's pickup.

The robbery was reported at 1:10 a.m. at a Church's Chicken on East Eighth Street, near Harbison Avenue, said Capt. Manuel Rodriguez of the National City Police Department.

The victims told police that the robbers walked into the business brandishing revolvers and demanded cash and the keys to a green GMC Sierra pickup parked outside. The clerks complied, and the robbers drove off in the pickup with an undisclosed amount of cash, Rodriguez said. No one was injured.

The robbers were black, of thin-to-medium build and wore black-and-white scarves over their faces, Rodriguez said. Both also wore hooded sweat shirts – one black, one gray.

The pickup was later recovered on a nearby street by police, Rodriguez said. No one was arrested.

Prostitution sting leads to 11 arrests

NATIONAL CITY – Ten women and a 16-year-old girl were arrested on suspicion of soliciting sex for money during a Police Department prostitution sting Friday night.

The sting was conducted along Roosevelt Avenue and National City Boulevard, between First and Seventh streets, said Capt. Manuel Rodriguez of the National City Police Department. It followed complaints from residents and business employees, he said.

One of the suspects initially ran from officers but was captured after a brief chase and a fall. The woman was treated for a minor hand injury from her fall. The suspects were issued citations and most were released with a requirement to appear in court.

One adult suspect was booked into jail on suspicion of prostitution and drug possession, after police searched her apartment and found about a gram of heroin and several needles, he said.

The 16-year-old suspect was booked into juvenile hall, Rodriguez said.
