  • Street: Charles Taylor (PDF)

  • AT THE MOVIES
    C'est magnifique
In critics' polls on the best movies, Jean Renoir's “The Rules of the Game” nips at the brassy heels of “Citizen Kane,” with a secondary surge for “The Godfather” (for my take, see adjoining list).

  • AT THE MOVIES
'Breaking and Entering' a nicely adult outing
Acting arrives in bracing streaks and packets in Anthony Minghella's “Breaking and Entering.” In sync arrive the panting themes – virtually posed in order, almost cross-indexed for our study.

  • AT THE MOVIES
'Norbit': Eddie Murphy mugs his 'Dreamgirl'
“Norbit” is not a thriller, action film or suspense story. Still, it achieves the assassination of comedy. A sort of compost pile of cellulite gags, and humor so broad it is almost a new dimension in physics, this one ostensibly stars Eddie Murphy. The “funny” thing is that we never see Murphy as himself. His talent isn't recognizable, either.

  • POP MUSIC
    Faith healer
Bismillaah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem, chants Lupe Fiasco, his first words on the Chicago native's full-length debut “Food & Liquor.” It's Arabic, and it's the first words in the first chapter (the Al-Fatiha) of the Koran, the holy book of Islam. It means: “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

  • EARTHLY MUSICAL MUSINGS BY GEORGE VARGA
    Who made you God?
Matt Haimovitz is the most acclaimed cellist to ever perform a solo gig at CBGB's, the now sadly defunct New York club that in the 1970s gave rise to The Ramones, Talking Heads and other now-legendary acts.

They say money can't buy love, but adventurous singles willing to pony up the highest bid can win a date at the Valentine's Day B&B Benefit Bash at the Belly Up Tavern Wednesday night.

Los Lobos gets 'back to the simpler things'
Los Lobos didn't make a good first impression on Steve Berlin. The young band from East Los Angeles, enthusiastic in its embrace of Mexican folk tradition, was opening a 1980 concert by Public Image Ltd., the post-punk outfit fronted by John Lydon, then better known as Sex Pistols sneer-leader Johnny Rotten.

  • POP MUSIC
Overshadowed by Big Brother? It's OK by him
When it comes to success, Livingston Taylor knows that it's all relative. While his older brother, James, was setting the mellow gold standard for singer-songwriters, Livingston eked out a few low-key 1970s hits like “I'll Come Running” and “Carolina Day.”

Music biz is right ZIP code for Venice
A quick glance at the tour page on Venice's Web site (www.VeniceCentral.com) reveals that the veteran, Venice, Calif., band is big in San Diego and ... Holland?

  • ALBUM REVIEWS
    Cut from the same cloth
At first glance, New York-born Norah Jones and London-born Lily Allen appear to have little in common, musically or otherwise. Vocally and lyrically, Jones, 27, seems as gentle and urbane as Allen, 21, does brash and acidic.

  • Short Takes
Think of this five-disc box as the companion set to “The Rock Snob's Dictionary” – Nico, David Ackles, Delaney & Bonnie, Love, Tim Buckley, the MC5, the Stooges ... well, we could go on.

  • EVENTOS LATINOS
Best bet • Get political with Maná
Maná has two sides. The first is the one everybody hears about: love songs played to the tune of pop rock; songs like “Vivir sin aire,” “Te lloré todo un río” and “Mariposa traicionera.”

  • ON STAGE
    Tapping the source
Claudia Gomez Vorce doesn't just respect her elders, she worships, literally, at their feet. Vorce is a tap dancer – for my money, the best in town – and, in tap's tradition of revering the masters, she regularly makes pilgrimages to the Las Vegas retirement home where the legendary Bunny Briggs now resides.

  • CLASSICAL MUSIC / JAZZ
    Taking the hard way out
Accepting the onset of middle age can be trying for anyone, but navigating a midlife transition can be especially difficult for a precociously gifted artist.

  • OUT GOING

During the month of February, more than 30 museums and historical sites will offer half-price admission with a free museum month pass. This pass and a Museum Month brochure are available at all San Diego County Macy's stores.

  • Curtain Call: A Look Ahead
No, not Celine Dion. That voice is in Las Vegas. Classical pop phenom Josh Groban croons in support of his third studio album, “Awake,” at ipayOne Center on April 6. $45-$99. (619) 220-TIXS.
