Beyond the box score

When Cla Meredith came out of the bullpen Saturday, it was the sidewinder's first appearance in nine games dating to May 9.

Since Meredith had given up seven runs on 10 hits over five innings in his four previous outings, questions were raised about Meredith's health possibly being a factor in his absence.

“I'm fine,” Meredith said. “But I'm getting a lot of 'what's wrong?' calls from friends back home. My number just didn't come up. About the fourth day, it got weird. But the starters were going longer and we've got a lot of good arms in the bullpen.

“That was the first time I experienced something like that.”
