The San Diego Union-Tribune

Key factors

May 21, 2007

Player of the Game: Justin Germano didn't strike out a batter. But he kept Seattle's hitters off balance and got 11 ground-ball outs. A throwing error by Khalil Greene led to the Mariners' run.

Offense: Adrian Gonzalez broke out of a 2-for-21 slump, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring the first Padres run and driving in the second.

Pitching: The bullpen troika of Heath Bell, Scott Linebrink and Trevor Hoffman worked three scoreless innings to preserve Germano's second win.

Defense: After Ichiro Suzuki stole second in the first inning, his sixth stolen base in three games against the Padres, Josh Bard threw him out when he tried to steal third. In the second inning, Bard threw out Adrian Beltre, who was trying to advance to second on a ball that bounced away from the catcher.
