A driving nation

Despite the rising cost of fuel, commuters are still mostly driving themselves to work, according to a 2005 survey.

Here are some facts about how Americans commute to work:

During 2005, 88 percent of workers were commuting by automobile to work.

77 percent of American workers drive to work alone.

About 1 in 10 workers carpools to work. Among cities with highest percentages of carpooling are Fresno (15.1 percent), Honolulu (15.6), Mesa, Ariz. (16.7), Phoenix (16.2) and Sacramento (15.7).

About 3.6 percent of American workers now work from home.

Portland, Ore., has the highest percentage of bicycle commuters (3.5 percent). That's about eight times higher than the national average. l Boston has the highest percentage of people who walk to work (13 percent)
