IN TRANSIT    GETTING YOU FROM HERE TO THERE
Elvis Week in Memphis

July 8, 2007

Thirty years after his death, Elvis fans of all ages from around the world will gather in Memphis Aug. 11-19 to commemorate the music and magic of The King. Organized by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Elvis Week is an annual event. This year's fest will include an Elvis tribute artist contest, an “Elvis: Midnight in Vegas” concert, a Graceland Scavenger Hunt and an Elvis Presley International Art Show. The Elvis Expo, covering 35,000 square feet of exhibit space, will be devoted to Elvis memorabilia. The week's yearly candlelight vigil always begins the night before the anniversary of Elvis' death, Aug. 16. Details: www.elvis.com.

Canada's Stratford Festival

Des McAnuff, the Tony-winning theater maestro who guided La Jolla Playhouse to so many stellar successes, is having fun these days in Canada. He's “artistic director designate” of the Stratford Festival, which runs through Nov. 3. (Stratford is about 100 miles west of Toronto.) The festival is best known for Shakespeare, and this season's productions include “The Merchant of Venice,” “King Lear” and “Othello.” There are a number of other shows on the program, too – from musicals to drama. Details: www.stratfordfestival.ca, (800) 567-1600.

Fliers' rights

If you're stranded for more than three hours on an airport tarmac, the nonprofit Coalition for an Airline Passengers' Bill of Rights wants to hear from you. The group is fighting for legislation to require airlines to give passengers the option of returning to the terminal once waits exceed three hours. The Department of Transportation (DOT) keeps statistics but doesn't include waits on small regional carriers or on planes that are diverted or never take off. Details: www.flyersrights.org, (877) 359-3776.

Something fishy off Kona

The deep, cobalt waters off the Kona Coast offer some of the richest big-game fishing in the world. Kona's first “grander” this year was caught in March – a 1,011-pound Pacific blue marlin. The spring run of big yellowfin tuna arrived early, with catches up to 191 pounds. But the hottest fishing isn't until next month: Kona's 48th annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, Aug. 6-10. Teams from around the world fish over five days, hoping to catch the biggest blue marlin and win the coveted HIBT Governors Trophy. (Most marlin caught are tagged and released.) Details: www.hibtfishing.com; (808) 836-3422. For information about fishing off the Kona Coast: www.fishinghawaiioffshore.com.
