SPECIAL SCREENS/SERIES
LIBRARY FILM
Sunday: “An Unreasonable Man,” a documentary on how public issues crusader Ralph Nader turned many liberals against him, when his quixotic election bids helped George W. Bush. Free at 2 p.m., Central Public Library, 820 E St., downtown.
MIDNIGHT MOVIE
Saturday: “A Christmas Story,” cultish hit from Jean Shepherd's holiday yarn, smoothly directed by Bob Clark in a way that many find adorable, others treacly. Darren McGavin hams with zest. (Elliott) Midnight at Landmark La Jolla Village.
Running:
“ACROSS THE UNIVERSE” 12
Giddy, head-trip vamp of the 1960s, with Beatles songs and Julie Taymor's wowzy theatricality. It's like “Rent” redone with a good score, though famed tunes both lift and devour the hackneyed story. (Elliott) Rated PG-13; 2 hr., 10 min.
“AMERICAN GANGSTER” 12
With a grabber of a story (and a true one to boot), this 1970s-besotted film has lots of raw action and “Superfly” atmosphere, though director Ridley Scott is a bit too fond of musicalized montage. Denzel Washington is Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas; Russell Crowe is the true-blue cop who dogs him. When they finally get a scene together, the action crackles between the actors. The story meanders, but the movie's grit and glitter give it at least fitful impact. (James Hebert) Rated R; 2 hr., 37 min.
“BEE MOVIE”
Charming and brightly conceived, Jerry Seinfeld's “Bee Movie” is as smooth as honey on a chocolate babka. Though not in the magical sphere of a “Finding Nemo” or “Ratatouille,” “Bee Movie” is fun to watch. Seinfeld's Barry B. Benson (he wears sneakers) is a honeybee yearning to do something more with his life than be just another worker. So, he ventures out of the hive for his first view of the open-air world. There's laughs along the way from John Goodman, Oprah Winfrey, Patrick Warburton and, especially, Chris Rock. (Lee Grant) Rated PG; 1 hr., 31 min.
“BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD” 12
Old actors' master Sidney Lumet still gets great work, from Albert Finney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei as a family broken by a dumb heist. But the plot overhustles its generic elements. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 47 min.
“BELLA” 12
Engaging, bilingual (subtitled) story of a bearded Latino cook (Eduardo Verastegui) and a charming Anglo waitress (Tammy Blanchard) who find, in and out of New York, reasons to open up. Ethnic and other cliches are gracefully laced by the cast, under Alejandro Gomez Monteverde's direction. (Elliott) Rated PG-13; 1 hr., 27 min.
“THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM”
Indestructible, almost inhuman rogue agent Bourne (Matt Damon) rebounds like a Teflon tiger from grim jams, seeking his identity, which will prove little. Julia Stiles is a little soul baggage between killings, David Strathairn a sharp villain, but this (we hope) series finisher is absurd and assaultive, like a migraine caused by steroids. (Elliott) Rated PG-13; 1 hr., 51 min.
“DAN IN REAL LIFE”
Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche engage as a fretful advice columnist and lovely vacation discovery, but Peter Hedges' movie is a custard of cute devices, forced family scenes and drawn-out tensions about when they will get together. It sweats, but also chuckles. (Elliott) Rated PG-13; 1 hr., 38 min.
“THE DARJEELING LIMITED”
Whimsy on tracks, as Wes Anderson's comedy of three brothers pretending to be spiritual seekers on a train ride across India finds, at least, impish brotherhood. A village death nearly derails it, but Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman shimmer wryly in the robustly colorful Indian milieu. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 36 min.
“DINOSAURS ALIVE!”
Never mind the exclamation mark, or the T. Rex lunging from the promo poster. This is all about the hard science and work of paleontologists. There are first-rate computerized beasties, but older kids and adults will walk out itching to get their hands on a top-of-the-line whisk broom for excavation. (Salm). At Fleet Science Center, Balboa Park; 40 min.
“ELIZABETH, THE GOLDEN AGE”
A gaudy, stuffed throwback to 1930s history costumers, with Cate Blanchett seeming to affect a haughty merge of Bette Davis and Kate Hepburn as Queen Liz I, while Clive Owen as sea hawk Walter Raleigh strikes Errol Flynn poses. Mostly, they preen their wardrobes in fancy court scheming, topped by a computerized Spanish Armada. (Elliott) Rated PG-13; 1 hr., 45 min.
“THE GAME PLAN”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson may be the Gibraltar of geniality, but for half of this he's stuck playing a colossal football QB egotist who confuses himself with Elvis, then gets tenderized by his surprise daughter, played by Madison Pettis. Pure Disney formula, but the cast chuckles it along. (Elliott) Rated PG; 1 hr., 29 min.
“GONE BABY GONE”
A shade brazen with pulped-up violence and plot surprises (the big one you might guess), but Ben Affleck did a fine job in sluicing the tensions of cop and family strife after a girl is abducted in a slummy Boston nabe. The cast is top-rate, including Casey Affleck in what might be a star-maker role, Amy Ryan, John Ashton, Amy Madigan, Michelle Monaghan, Morgan Freeman and the prodigiously conflicted Ed Harris. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 54 min.
“THE HEARTBREAK KID”
The Farrelly brothers' gags might make you gag, if they weren't so effective at inducing laughs. The princes of raunch (“There's Something About Mary,” etc.) remake the 1972 romantic satire with Ben Stiller as a dithering newlywed, Malin Akerman as his freaky wife, Michelle Monaghan as the alluring stranger and various animals and bodily matters as supporting cast. Fun of the guiltiest variety. (Hebert) Rated R; 1 hr., 55 min.
“IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH”
American incompetence, inferred: Paul Haggis' disturbing drama about a former Army cop (Tommy Lee Jones in a career crowner) working with a young civilian cop (Charlize Theron) to unravel the grisly murder of his son, whose return from Iraq is human shrapnel from a war often so ineptly run that troops flounder among an embittered, alienated population. The film is a brooding bombshell. (Elliott) Rated R; 2 hr.
“INTO THE WILD” 12
Sean Penn's chronicle of the literary-minded young renegade Chris McCandless (Emile Hirsch) achieves a poetry of its own. Like its fascinating, tragic subject, the movie seems drunk on nature and the romance of loneliness. Strong supporting cast (Catherine Keener, hal Holbrook, Marcia Gay Harden) and Eddie Vedder's moody music adds depth to a sometimes overcooked, ultimately rewarding film. (Jim Hebert) Rated R; 2 hr., 20 min.
“THE KINGDOM”
Despite stereotypes and a go-go mayhem climax, this take on Saudi Arabia as a hot petri dish for fanatics is a skilled, fierce thriller with fine work by Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper and, as a Saudi officer, Ashraf Barhom. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 40 min.
“LARS AND THE REAL GIRL” 12
Odd all the way, Craig Gillespie's dry comedy is about a nice nerd (Ryan Gosling) who finds a big plastic love doll all he thinks he needs, in a sexless way. Others buy into his fantasy, which defies plot gravity and even common sense, but has charming moments. (Elliott) Rated PG-13; 1 hr., 45 min.
“LIONS FOR LAMBS”
Robert Redford's well-meant but petrified pamphlet of a movie features two bull sessions about moral choices in the terror era (debaters nagging it through are weary Redford and young Andrew Garfield, also subtle Meryl Streep and posturing Tom Cruise), intercut with pathetic action from a U.S. military probe in a fake-looking Afghanistan. Each side gets balanced by sinking in blather, and the filming is fairly awful. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 34 min.
“LUST, CAUTION”
Ang Lee's luxuriantly pretty film, with magnetic (yet fairly dull) Tony Leung Chiu Wai as a cold Chinese traitor slowly melting for a patriotic beauty (pert Wei Tang) who works for anti-Japanese elements. Their fine, candid bodies entwine as knottily as the dated plot in Old Shanghai. Drama remains moribund, despite the lust that won an NC-17 rating. (Elliott) 2 hr., 42 min.
“MARTIAN CHILD”
Deft, rather dreamy charmer about a lonely widower (John Cusack) and a lonely kid who thinks he's from Mars. Surefire Cusack and young Bobby Coleman carry Menno Meyjes' slight but appealing film, despite some pretty obvious popping of corn in the script. (Elliott) Rated PG; 1 hr., 33 min.
“MICHAEL CLAYTON”
George Clooney sags earnestly as a legal fixer caught in dirty schemes he doesn't like, until finally he gets to pop some Clooney star suavity and ego at swinishly immoral legal eagle Tilda Swinton. The fussy plot skulks and sweats, but Tony Gilroy got intense work from Tom Wilkinson, Sydney Pollack, etc. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 52 min.
“MUSIC WITHIN” 12
Touching view of Richard Pimentel (appealing Ron Livingstone), Vietnam War vet and crusader for the handicapped. Michael Sheen is terrific as his afflicted pal, yet the soundtrack is a nostalgia platter party. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 41 min.
“P2”
Down to the cellar, or sewer, or hell, but really a big underground garage where pretty Rachel Nichols runs around screaming in her undies, terrorized by a loony, Elvis-loving security guard (Wes Bentley, who's like Charles Grodin trying to be vile). She springs back, of course, for grisly payback, as every dumb horror cliche gets its turn in the truly menacing structure. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 38 min.
“SEA MONSTERS: A PREHISTORIC ADVENTURE” 12
Set 80 million years ago, the IMAX film follows the life cycle of a family of Dolichorhynchops, a smallish predator pursued by a larger monster dino, which becomes cloying and ultimately vexatious. But the in-your-face computer graphics will have you wishing you'd brought a harpoon gun. (Salm) At Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Balboa Park; 40 min.
“30 DAYS OF NIGHT” 12
Vampires fang-out during in a whole month's dead of winter in little Barrow, Alaska. Danny Huston has a bloodsucker's ball as the somewhat verbal and even pensive head of the attack creeps, while Josh Hartnett is the young sheriff who staggers to manhood among the slashed corpses. An awful lot of blood is wasted and, of course, we get no clue on how survivors endure for a month without heat in a frosty attic. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 37 min.
“WE OWN THE NIGHT” 12
Another wannabe “Godfather,” as James Gray grimly tops his New York crime trio that began with “Little Odessa” and “The Yards.” The plot curls around cops, a Russian mob in New York, whores, clubs, a bad-sheep son (Joaquin Phoenix) who shears himself back into family favor. It has vital urgency, a great car chase in the rain, keen work by Phoenix, Robert Duvall, Mark Wahlberg, not merely decorative Eva Mendes. (Elliott) Rated R; 1 hr., 49 min.
