Authorities in Northern California have arrested a Napa man in a string of bank robberies across the state, including recent holdups in Rancho Bernardo, La Jolla and Carlsbad.
California Highway Patrol officers arrested Arthur Cheney, 64, at gunpoint Wednesday as he drove on state Route 70 near Marysville.
A CHP spokesman said that after taking Cheney into custody, officers found a handwritten note in his car that read “Robbery – 100s and 50s only.”
Cheney is a suspect in robberies at 16 banks across the state since July, including Nov. 27 in Rancho Bernardo. Authorities had dubbed the robber the “Highway 101 Bandit.”
Authorities say they believe the robbery streak began in July with a holdup of the Bank of Marin in Petaluma.
