12th Night choral fest a free treat for holiday

STAFF WRITER

January 5, 2008

OCEANSIDE – Church choirs “practice and practice” their Christmas music, and then usually only get to present it once, said Larry Gerling, choral director at First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside.

Tomorrow, his church choirs and those of five other congregations will have a chance for a repeat performance. They will offer the public a free concert at 6 p.m.

It's an ecumenical event by choirs from Roman Catholic, Presbyterian and Methodist congregations in Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista and Escondido.

They will celebrate 12th Night, or Epiphany, the Christian feast marking the revelation of Jesus to humanity and the visit of the Magi, also known as the Three Wise Men. In some cultures, it is the most important holiday.

DETAILS
12th Night Choral Festival

What: Seven church choirs perform

When: 6 p.m. tomorrow

Where: First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside, 2001 El Camino Real

Admission: Free

Then-choir director Douglas Lynn started the 12th Night musical tradition at First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside seven years ago and continues to participate, even though he has moved on to another church and denomination. Lynn is now the director of music at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, whose choir will be among the participants.

Choirs from St. Elizabeth Seton and Resurrection Catholic churches, Grace Presbyterian Church and San Luis Rey Valley United Methodist Church also will participate, Gerling said.

Additionally, he said, the Chancel and the New Creation choirs from First Presbyterian will perform. Altogether, he said, about 150 singers will be involved in the concert.

Each choir will present two pieces, and the audience will be asked to sing a carol during intervals between the performances, Gerling said.
