THE REEL SCOOP    WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW
'Juno' and 'P.S. I Love You' are rated safe for teens

January 5, 2008

'Juno'

Rating: PG-13 for mature thematic material, sexual content and language.

What it's about: Teenagers have sex; she gets pregnant and decides to have a baby and give it up for adoption.

The kid attractor factor: Sassy, smart-alecky Ellen Page plays a teen who handles her pregnancy with the same sarcasm and confusion that rule the rest of her life.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Unsafe sex leads to all sorts of unpleasant possible alternatives, from abortion to carrying a baby to term at an age when you cannot handle it.

Violence: None.

Language: Not as coarse as you might expect sexually active teens to be.

Sex: Uh, yes. Not incredibly explicit, though.

Drugs: None.

Parents' advisory: An “adult” movie that amusingly and sweetly takes on serious issues, a film with strong teen appeal – though they'll probably want to see it by themselves, without their parents.

'P.S. I Love You'

Rating: PG-13 for sexual references and brief nudity.

What it's about: A dead husband has planned elaborate travels and exercises to help his beloved wife move on with her life.

The kid attractor factor: Gerard Butler, the “300” hottie, is the cheerful yet dead Irish hubby who charms Hilary Swank, even after death.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Don't wait to begin living your life. There isn't time.

Violence: None.

Language: Pretty clean.

Sex: Played for laughs, including a brief bare backside.

Drugs: Alcohol, bars.

Parents' advisory: Not the worst date movie to send your teens off to see, but younger kids will be bored to tears.
