PALOMAR MOUNTAIN: No need for panic if you see smoke in the distance.
Beginning tomorrow, U.S. Forest Service firefighters will begin controlled burns on Palomar Mountain in an ongoing effort to reduce fuels that could escalate future fires.
With moisture levels relatively high on the mountain because of recent rain and snow, the burns will continue through the week unless winds pick up, Battalion Chief Wes Ruise said.
Controlled burns – or prescribed burns, as they are often called – will also be done in other parts of the forest between now and May.
