PUBLIC SAFETY: REGIONAL EDITION
Police question two men suspected in carjacking

February 10, 2008

SAN DIEGO: Police were questioning two men yesterday who are suspected of taking a man's car at gunpoint in Serra Mesa on Friday night after a previous carjacking attempt failed.

The suspects first approached a 22-year-old man at Gramercy and Sandrock roads about 9:40 p.m., pistol-whipped him and tried to steal his Mitsubishi sedan, San Diego police said.

The victim resisted, and the men then ran to Berger Avenue, where they threatened a 55-year-old man with a handgun and demanded his keys.

The suspects drove away in his blue 1998 Mitsubishi.

About 4:15 p.m. yesterday, police spotted the Mitsubishi and pulled it over on Finch Lane in Birdrock. Four people in the car ran, and two were captured.

Pedestrian killed by car was Oceanside man, 51

OCEANSIDE: A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a car Friday night while crossing El Camino Real has been identified as an Oceanside man.

Calvin Threatt, 51, who was believed to be a transient, died at the scene, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

Authorities said a 2006 Honda Civic, driven by a 23-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine, was traveling north on El Camino Real when Threatt crossed the road in front of the car about 6:40 p.m.

The driver was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released.

Witnesses are asked to call Oceanside police at (760) 435-4833 or (760) 435-4801.

Car, van run into houses; 1 driver, 1 resident hurt

SAN DIEGO: A car and a van ran into houses in separate incidents yesterday, injuring two people, police said.

In the first incident, a man suspected of drunken driving ran his car into a house on Arverne Street near Auburndale Street in Clairemont Mesa about 3 a.m., suffering minor injuries, San Diego police Sgt. Garry Collins said.

A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said the driver was taken to a hospital. The home's residents were displaced but not injured.

In the other incident, a van crashed into a house on Biloxi Street off 54th Street in Oak Park about 1 p.m.

“It looks like the van just plowed into the house,” Collins said.

Collins said the driver jumped into a red Dodge Ram truck driven by someone else, and the truck sped off.

A woman in the house was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to a hospital, the dispatcher said.

The van driver was described as Latino, in his late 30s to early 40s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a heavy build, long curly hair and a mustache. He was wearing a dark sweat shirt and blue jeans.
