PUBLIC SAFETY: REGIONAL EDITION
Man walking in channel after dark is shot twice

February 17, 2008

ESCONDIDO: A man walking in the dark in the city's flood-control channel last night was shot twice but is expected to survive.

Escondido police Sgt. Aaron Heath said the 21-year-old was near Harding Street about 7 p.m. when he heard several gunshots, then was hit in the arm. Another bullet grazed his ear.

The man got to a street and flagged down a passing car, whose driver took him to a hospital.

Heath said the man never saw his attacker.

21-year-old man arrested in stabbing in El Cajon

EL CAJON: Police have arrested a 21-year-old man suspected of stabbing another man last week.

Joshua Stephen Smith was taken into custody Friday in connection with a stabbing about 8:20 p.m. Monday on Wayne Avenue in El Cajon, police Lt. Mark Coit said.

Smith left his cell phone behind Monday night, and detectives traced it back to him, Coit said. The stabbing victim, whose name has not been released, also identified Smith.

Police issued a bulletin on the case, and an officer who recognized Smith from a previous investigation went to his house. Smith wasn't there, but the officer left a message for Smith to contact him at the Police Department. Smith was later arrested.

Four jump into water to escape boat blaze

POINT LOMA: A fire aboard a boat just off Point Loma yesterday afternoon prompted four people on board to jump into the water.

All aboard the 35-foot pleasure craft were wearing life vests and were quickly rescued about 12:30 p.m. by a good Samaritan, whose boat took them to a Coast Guard rescue vessel. None needed medical attention, officials said.

Two Harbor Police firefighting boats put out the blaze, and the craft was towed to a local boatyard. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

NORTH COUNTY: A man killed in an off-road accident Friday has been identified as Kenneth Meyer, 43, of Monrovia.

Meyer was driving an all-terrain vehicle alone at Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area and apparently lost control and flipped the vehicle, said Michael Elano, a Medical Examiner's Office investigator. Meyer's body was found by a friend. A cause of death has not been determined.
