SHORT TAKES: NORTH COASTAL EDITION
Carlsbad Pee Wee basketball, indoor soccer offered

February 17, 2008

The Carlsbad Recreation Department offers Pee Wee Sports programs designed to give participants the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of a sport in a recreational, noncompetitive environment. The programs welcome children of all abilities, with the goal of having fun.

Pee Wee indoor soccer is for boys and girls ages 4 to 6. Each Saturday, children will arrive 20 minutes before game time for practice then play a game with four 8-minute periods.

Evaluation, practices and games will be at Stagecoach Community Center gymnasium, 3420 Camino de los Coches, (760) 602-4690.

In order to create balanced teams, players must attend assessments between 1:30 and 4 p.m. March 29 at Stagecoach Community Center. Children will be evaluated and placed on teams by Youth Sports staff. Games will be played between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturdays. The cost is $45 for Carlsbad residents and $55 for nonresidents.

Pee Wee basketball is for boys and girls in first or second grade. This program prepares second-graders who want to continue in the Youth Basketball League in the fall.

Children play on a court with 8-foot baskets and a junior-size basketball. All practices and games are at Calavera Hills Community Center, 2997 Glasgow Drive, (760) 602-4680.

Children will meet two days a week during the afternoon, with practices on Tuesdays and games on Thursdays. Players must attend assessment March 29 at Calavera Hills Community Center, between 10 a.m. and noon. Children will be evaluated and placed on teams.
