With four athletes earning automatic NCAA Division II qualifying performances, the UCSD women's track and field team scored 217.5 points to win the San Diego City Championships yesterday at UCSD. SDSU was runner-up (204), followed by PLNU (125.5) and Cal State San Marcos (68).
On the men's side, UCSD won with a score of 193.50, followed by PLNU (134.5) and CSUSM (123).
UCSD's Whitney Johnson (19 feet, 2 inches) qualified in the long jump, Sarah Hendy (158-4) in the discus, Christine Merrill in both the 100 hurdles (14.46 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:02.21), and Melissa Karnaze in the hammer (163-4). The Tritons' 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams also qualified, with times of 47.29 (second to SDSU's 46.48) and 3:48.20, respectively.
Shana Solomon won both the 100 (12.16) and 200 meters (24.88) for SDSU and also was part of the winning Aztecs 4x100 relay team. Billy Walker of CSUSM won the 100 (11.15) and 200 (22.58) and was on the winning 4x100 relay team for the Cougars (42.42).
Men's basketball
UCSD won the California Collegiate Athletic Association title with a 64-56 victory over Cal Poly Pomona at San Bernardino, guaranteeing the Tritons (18-11) a spot in their first NCAA Division II Tournament. Henry Patterson, the CCAA tournament's Most Valuable Player, had 17 points to lead UCSD while Jordan Lawley had 14 points and Darryl Lawlor added 11 points with 10 rebounds against Cal Poly Pomona (13-15). “We've had great senior leadership all year long,” UCSD head coach Chris Carlson said, “and it showed in the performances of Clint Allard (11 points), Andrew Hatch and Henry Patterson.”
