Bush's income tax payment disclosed

WASHINGTON – President Bush and his wife paid $221,635 in federal taxes on an adjusted gross income of $923,807 for 2007, according to figures released by the White House.

The income total includes a $150,000 advance received by Laura Bush for the children's book she co-authored with her daughter, Jenna. Last year, the president and the first lady paid $186,378 in federal taxes on their income of $765,801. Bush's salary as president is about $400,000.

Blast levels two houses; no one hurt

PITTSBURGH – An apparent explosion showered bricks on a dense residential neighborhood and shattered windows blocks away yesterday, leveling two row houses and damaging at least two dozen other homes. No injuries were reported.

The cause wasn't immediately known, city officials said.

Both houses were vacant.

Car pins man on courthouse steps

NEW YORK – A car hurtled up the courthouse steps made famous by “Law & Order” yesterday, injuring six people, one of whom was pinned beneath the vehicle and had to be freed by firefighters.

The car jumped a curb, rear-ended a coffee cart and careered up the busy stairs of Manhattan's state Supreme Court building, pinning one man beneath its front end. Police said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening..

Artillery mishap injures cat in home

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. – A piece of artillery that was apparently misfired by the military crashed through the roof of a home miles away yesterday and injured a young girl's cat, which had to be euthanized, officials said.

No people were injured when the 2-pound piece hit the Jefferson Township home about 2 ½ miles from the Picatinny Arsenal and landed in the girl's bed, said Peter Rowland, arsenal spokesman. She wasn't home, but her cat was sleeping on the bed.

Severe weather hits South again

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Another round of severe weather raked the storm-weary South with rain, hail and high winds yesterday, damaging homes and injuring at least five people in Tennessee and Kentucky.

A mother and two children were hurt when strong thunderstorms moved through southern Kentucky in the early morning, knocking over their trailer near Bowling Green, officials said.
