Accident report cites lifeguards' slowness
SANTA CLARA – A recently released state accident report has concluded that slow reaction by lifeguards may have hampered the rescue of a 4-year-old who drowned at the Great America amusement park last summer.
Cal-OSHA's report examined the death of Carlos Flores, who died July 12 in the Great Barrier Reef wave pool at the San Francisco Bay Area park.
The Santa Clara County coroner's office previously ruled the death an accidental drowning. Cal-OSHA found the boy was floating in the pool for 39 seconds even though lifeguards are supposed to respond within 10 seconds and reach a person within 20. Great America has been ordered to retrain its lifeguards.
