With the June 3 primary fast approaching, county election officials are looking for on-call poll workers to back up the roughly 6,600 poll workers signed up for election day.
Registrar of Voters Deborah Seiler said she has filled all but 20 of the poll-worker jobs but is hoping to find 350 on-call workers who could show up if people call in sick or have scheduling conflicts.
So far, Seiler has signed up about 200 for the on-call help. Seiler said she especially needs workers who can speak Spanish, Filipino or Vietnamese.
To qualify, a poll worker must be registered to vote, attend a four-hour training class, have a vehicle and be willing to travel to communities throughout the county. It pays up to $150 a day.
The need is great. About 15 percent of people who sign up to be poll workers typically drop out before election day.
To be a poll worker, send an e-mail to pollworker@sdcounty.ca.gov or call (858) 565-5800.
