Mt. Carmel hires boys basketball coach

STAFF WRITER

May 30, 2008

Conrad Sun has been named boys basketball coach at Mt. Carmel High, a partnership that will save him three hours and 222 miles of driving a day. Minimum.

Sun, whose children went to Santa Fe Christian, where he was an assistant coach under Randy Wright for six years, was the head coach at Village Christian in San Fernando Valley this winter.

“I'd get up at 4:30 a.m. when we had early practice or leave at 1 p.m. when we had afternoon practice,” said Sun, whose son Marcus was a third-team all-section player in 2006, leading SFC into the state championship game.

“I only missed one practice or game and that was when they closed I-5 because of the fires.”

Sun replaces Chris Vitous, who stepped down for family reasons.

Sun's Village Christian team was 7-20. The school of 600 students played in a tough Alpha League headed by Southern Section champ Valley Christian.

“I've been in the San Diego community 20 years, but I've come to discover that Mt. Carmel has a community of its own,” said Sun. “I learned last year that it's what the head coach does before and after the games that is the difference (from being an assistant).

“I know we're loaded with interested people at Mt. Carmel, and I'll find out a lot more during summer league.”
